Queen Camilla Goes on a Giant Easter Egg Hunt in Her First Outing Since King Charles' Hospitalization

Queen Camilla is on a special Easter egg hunt.

The Queen, 77, went to see an oversized egg based on a famous nursery rhyme just outside the walls of Buckingham Palace on April 1. The giant Green Man Humpty Dumpty Egg installation is part of an art project being put on in aid of a poignant cause close to the heart of Camilla and King Charles.

The egg, painted by Alice Springs, was commissioned by the royal couple and is installed by the King's Gallery in the shadow of the palace in central London. It is part of the Big Egg Hunt, which sees more than 120 huge egg sculptures make up a trail across London. The project is all in aid of the Elephant Family, which was set up by Camilla's late brother Mark Shand. Charles and Camilla are joint patrons of the organization.

It was Queen Camilla’s first official outing since King Charles, 76, was briefly hospitalized on March 27 following a bad reaction to his cancer treatment and was forced to cancel some royal duties. It was said, by Buckingham Palace at the time that "the King experienced temporary side effects that required a short period of observation in [the] hospital."

After his hospitalization, King Charles headed back to his London residence, Clarence House, where he was said to have continued working on his state papers. As a precaution and acting on medical advice, the monarch's scheduled program the following day, a visit to Birmingham, was postponed.

As Queen Camilla resumed her duties on Tuesday, King Charles was also working despite his recent hospital visit. On the morning of April 1, he carried out some investitures at Windsor Castle, rewarding those who’ve gone above and beyond in British society.

At the Easter egg installation, Camilla chatted with Elephant Family representatives and the artist. The Queen was shown how the egg’s leafy green design was inspired by her and Charles' love of nature and conservation.

In a reference to the Humpty Dumpty theme and the line "all the King's horses and all the King's men," there were two members of the Coldstream Guards stationed nearby.

The Elephant Family, which works on conservation efforts to tackle challenges faced by Asia's wildlife and the communities living close by, says 7,000 people have downloaded the app to trace the eggs on their trail around London.

Despite the King's health setback on March 27, he and Camilla are preparing for a tour to Italy starting on April 7. However, it was announced on March 25 that part of the visit — to the Vatican to meet with Pope Francis — will not take place amid the Pope's recent health struggles.
