Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco are on cloud nine!

After announcing their engagement on Wednesday, Dec. 11, a source confirms exclusively to PEOPLE that Blanco proposed earlier in the day.

"It was very her," says the source of the special moment, which included Gomez's favorite meal from Taco Bell. "It was a total surprise to Selena."

Later in the evening, the couple had an "impromptu gathering" with their friends and family to celebrate their happy news, adds the source.

"Benny and Selena were so excited to share the news right away with their loved ones," says the source. "It's such a true partnership between them."

Gomez, 32, showed off her dazzling marquise-shaped engagement ring on Instagram, captioning a series of photos "forever begins now.."

The Emilia Pérez star — who just received two Golden Globe nominations earlier this week — received a flood of support from A-listers in her comments section. "HONEY!! Congratulations sweet mama!" wrote Jennifer Aniston. Joked longtime BFF Taylor Swift: "yes I will be the flower girl."

Gomez and Blanco, 36, first met years ago and collaborated on her 2019 single "I Can't Get Enough" with Tainy and J Balvin.

Blanco opened up about his relationship to PEOPLE in its Sexiest Man Alive issue last month, saying he had found a "true best friend" in Gomez.

The Rare Beauty founder cheered on Blanco, telling CBS Sunday Morning that she's "beyond proud" to have someone by her side who "deeply cares about every tiny detail about who I am."
