After meeting on the set of the soap opera One Life to Live, the couple got married on Dec. 9, 2007. Nearly a decade later, they started a family after initially being unsure if parenthood was in the cards for them at all. “David and I were really undecided about having kids,” she told PARENTS in October 2020. “We had been together for 10 years and were happy. Nothing was missing. Every year, we'd have 'the Baby Discussion' and always decided to put it off.” The couple welcomed their first son, Enzo, in 2016, followed by their son, Axel, in 2020. “I’m so grateful they were surprises, or we may never have gotten here,” Melissa said. Unsurprisingly, having kids has been life-changing for the actress. She’s been open about the challenges and joys of parenthood — and the difficulty of being a working mom. “Motherhood is WILD. Nothing prepares you,” she wrote in a heartfelt 2023 Mother’s Day post on Instagram. “It is all consuming. It’s hard. It makes your heart explode over and over. It’s joyful. It’s fun. It’s also very not fun. It’s opposing feelings stretching you in different directions all day every day.” Here’s everything to know about Melissa Fumero’s two kids, Enzo and Axel. A few months earlier, the couple announced that they were expecting their first child together with a sweet and funny Instagram post. “Amazing time at our surprise baby shower yesterday. Oh, PS- I'm pregnant,” Melissa wrote in the caption. The actress later opened up to PEOPLE about her pregnancy, referring to it as “kind of a surprise.” “I had to wrap my head around it rather quickly, but I’m looking forward to it,” she said. “My husband and I have been together a long time, so it’s very special for us and we’re just really happy and excited.” Enzo was born several months later, weighing 7 lbs., 15 oz. and measuring 19.5 inches long. “We actually have a good friend who named their son Enzo years ago and the name always stuck with us,” Melissa told PEOPLE in April 2016. “When we found out we were having a boy, we decided really early on that it was going to be Enzo.” As for how she was adjusting to motherhood, the Brooklyn Nine-Nine star noted the lack of sleep along with her shifting priorities. “He’s just completely taken over our life,” she said. “But it’s amazing. Your life carries more weight after you have a child. I drive slower and get things done with a little more caution now.” Melissa went on to praise her husband for being such a good father, noting how "hands-on" David was, from cooking her meals to caring for their newborn. In fact, her mom stayed with her for nearly a month to help with the adjustment period. “He was such a difficult baby,” the actress told PARENTS magazine. “He never slept and had the longest, most extreme tantrums during which all three of us would be sobbing. Even my dad cried once!” Because of that, Melissa had to change the way she approached motherhood. “I thought my husband and I would be really strict parents — super-regimented, very scheduled, no screens,” she explained. “What I learned is that there are just so many parenting techniques out there. Some work, some don't.” Luckily, that phase didn’t last forever. In 2022, Melissa celebrated her son’s 6th birthday with a heartfelt Instagram tribute, praising his sense of humor and adventure. “Enzo, I am so proud of the little man you are becoming- clever, charming, hella funny, willful AF, pretty bossy if we’re being honest, and also so so sooo sweet and loving. You’re sensitive and tough. A combo I personally admire,” she wrote. “I love you my little buddy. I’m so proud to be your mama.” Axel Fumero, 5 Melissa and David Fumero's youngest son Axel Fumero dressed as a vampire for Halloween in 2021. David Fumero/ Instagram In November 2019, the Blockbuster actress announced that she was expecting baby number two. “Oh yeah, I’m hella pregnant,” she wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of her in front of a mirror. “To be honest, I haven’t felt like posting about it because this pregnancy has been way harder.” Melissa and David welcomed their second son, Axel Fumero, on Feb. 14, 2020. The actress shared the news the next day with a sweet Instagram post. “Welcome to the world, Axel. You have made Valentine’s Day my new favorite holiday!” she captioned a black-and-white photo of her newborn son. Unlike her experience with Enzo, Melissa didn’t have as much help from friends and family after Axel was born. “With my first son, everyone came to visit,” she told PARENTS. “We had so much support. But this time, David and I were completely on our own. We've had to adjust to being a family of four in such an intense way. It's been both exhausting and overwhelming.” Just a month after Axel’s birth, the pandemic led to nationwide shutdowns. While being stuck at home with a newborn and a 4-year-old was “very intense,” it was also a blessing in disguise. Melissa Fumero smiles with her two sons Enzo Fumero and Axel Fumero in December 2020. David Fumero/ Instagram “Because of everything, I ended up having a whole year home with both of my kids,” Melissa told PureWow in November 2022. “It was like time off that I actually could enjoy, which is so rare.” In 2024, Axel celebrated his 4th birthday with tons of love from his parents. “Our little dude turned 4 today. Our pandemic baby. Our little Valentine. Our sweet, silly, and dance loving puppy,” Melissa wrote in a sweet Instagram post. She continued, “Axel, we are so proud of the little boy you are becoming. The sweet friends you’ve chosen, how much you love to draw and paint, how you love and look up to your older brother, and how much you love to cuddle.” Close Leave a Comment
