- "I was always having great sex, I just wasn’t having any fun," Goldberg said on The View, in reference to her past relationships.

Whoopi Goldberg has been married and divorced three times — but she says her sex life was never the problem in those relationships.
Goldberg, 69, admitted that she "just wasn't having any fun" in any of her three marriages during The View on Thursday, March 27, as the show's panel of co-hosts discussed Ben Affleck's recent interview with GQ in which he emphasized that there was "no scandal, no soap opera, no intrigue" behind his divorce from Jennifer Lopez.
After Goldberg additionally referenced reading an op-ed by a woman who wrote that "her divorce led to new experiences and great sex," Joy Behar asked Goldberg whether that notion lined up with her own experiences.

"It had nothing to do with the divorce, I was just glad to get the hell out of there," Goldberg responded. "I was always having great sex, I just wasn’t having any fun. So that's why I don't understand what [the op-ed's author is] saying."
"Well they don’t do better if they’ve been cheated on," she added, after Sunny Hostin suggested many women experience a "glow up" after a divorce. "You gotta take — these are not end all be alls."

Goldberg's first marriage to husband Alvin Martin ended in divorce in 1979; the two share daughter Alexandrea, 51. In 1986, Goldberg married cinematographer David Claessen; they divorced two years later. She then married Lyle Trachtenberg in 1994 before the pair split the following year.
Goldberg has suggested in the past that she simply does not have the temperament to maintain a marriage. When she appeared on Who's Talking to Chris Wallace in May 2024, she said, "Not, I don't," when asked whether she does not "want to share" in a marriage. "I don't care how you feel. It’s terrible," she continued with a laugh. "You know, when you're married to somebody, you have to be invested in how they're feeling. I am not."

"I’m invested in my kid. I'm invested in her kids," she added at that time. "I'm invested in my son-in-law. I'm invested in my friends. But I'm not invested in a relationship that would require as much as having a child requires and I know that that's not for me."
Despite those words, Goldberg said in October 2024 that she keeps "in touch with all my exes" and said she does not feel hate for any of her past partners.
"I'm in touch with every one of them, because once they were my friends. It doesn't mean that we talk all the time, but I will be respectful enough for you," she said. "I don't have to sleep with you, I don't have to eat with you — I don't have to do any of those things that a relationship forces. But I can be [friendly], because there's nobody that I've lived with or messed with that I absolutely hate."
