On Oct. 21, 2021, producer and actor Alec Baldwin discharged a prop gun containing "a live round,” while filming the upcoming Western Rust at Bonanza Creek Ranch in New Mexico. Halyna was taken to the hospital by helicopter but later died from her wounds. Halyna is survived by her loving family who have continued to honor her memory by advocating for better on-set safety. Her husband, Matthew Hutchins and their son, Andros Hutchins, her father Anatolii Androsovych, mother Olga Solovey and younger sister Svetlana Zemko have all also been vocal in seeking justice. The Hutchins family has since filed two lawsuits related to their loved one's death. "To lose my sister at least personally for me was a horrible experience and it is one of the biggest losses of my life," Zemko said in a 2023 statement. "It is for this reason that I would like those who are at fault for somebody to carry that responsibility." On March 11, Halyna's friend Rachel Mason released the Hulu documentary Last Take about the loss of her loved one. The director said that she followed through on the project because of Matt. “After Halyna died, her husband Matt asked me to make a film about her life,” she told the Los Angeles Times. “But, I realized I couldn’t make a film about her life if I didn’t understand how she died.” From their early life in Ukraine to honoring Halyna’s legacy, here’s everything to know about the family of Halyna Hutchins. "Halyna's family is trapped in Kyiv because of the danger of travel," he wrote, per NPR. "Her mother continues to work in the hospital where she has been a nurse for over a decade because her country needs her, but also because they cannot leave safely." Matt added, "Right away when I met her I saw her ambition and I just felt like if I could have that ambition in my life, what could I accomplish?" In 2021, a friend of Halyna’s told PEOPLE that the couple had a "beautiful partnership ... [They] supported each other's dreams." Since his wife’s death, Matt has become involved in advocating for increased safety practices within the film industry, emphasizing the need for more regulations on on-set firearms as a protection for cast and crew members. The following year, the Hutchins family filed a lawsuit against Baldwin, the film's producers and several crew members, which was paused while awaiting the end of the actor's manslaughter trial. After the charges against Baldwin were dismissed due to the alleged mishandling of evidence, the Hutchins family lawsuit was allowed to move forward. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna.” In the pilot episode of his 2025 reality show, The Baldwins, the actor spoke about Halyna’s death. The Hutchins family and Matt have also criticized Baldwin's 2025 TLC reality series The Baldwins. Around the time of the series premiere, Allred and other attorneys working for Halyna’s family filed a notice of deposition in their wrongful death lawsuit. “It is long overdue for Alec Baldwin to admit and face the real-life consequences that he caused Halyna’s parents and sister. It is time for him to face reality under oath,” they wrote in a statement. “Is his reality show just a veiled attempt to create sympathy for himself with a future jury pool in our civil case? Is this just a shameless attempt to portray him as the real victim in this case?” the statement asked. It also claimed that the actor “never called or tried to contact her parents or sister to say that he was sorry, and to this day he has never taken responsibility for Halyna’s death." After Matt's lawsuit was settled, he was put in charge of finishing the production of Rust. During Hulu's Last Take documentary, actor Josh Hopkins said that he originally didn't want to finish the movie. "They said Matt [Halyna's husband] wants it done. I said, 'Look, I believe you. But I'm not coming back for anything unless I hear it from his mouth,' " he said. "They put me on a Zoom with him. He said he wanted it finished and she would want it finished and people to see her work." Olga was also interviewed in Last Take and shared openly about the loss of her daughter and why she supported the finishing of Rust. "Maybe some people didn't want it. But I wanted this to happen because it was a big work of Halyna. She wanted this movie to be finished," she said. "I will watch the movie. Absolutely. I want to see my daughter’s work. It's her big work." Olga continued, "I also wanted this to happen for Andros. I want him to be proud of his mother." Close Leave a Comment
