McDonald’s Introduces Meals Inspired by A Minecraft Movie with Pixelated Grimace and Hamburglar Toys

Miners, gamers and moviegoers have a new reason to go to McDonald’s.

On Thursday, March 20, the fast food chain revealed its upcoming bundles, A Minecraft Movie Meal and A Minecraft Movie Happy Meal, are coming to restaurants nationwide on Tuesday, April 1. The meals take inspiration from Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming release, A Minecraft Movie, for the food items and collectibles.

A Minecraft Movie Meal comes with a Big Mac or 10-piece Chicken McNuggets, medium fries, a medium drink and a limited-edition collectible. But fans who opt for the nuggets can get a special hot sauce with a nod to the beloved video game. Nether Flame Sauce takes inspiration from “The Nether” (a hell-like universe in Minecraft) and is made of crushed red pepper, cayenne and garlic.

A Minecraft Movie Happy Meal comes with the choice of a hamburger or four and six-piece chicken nuggets. Each meal comes with fries and apple slices plus a kids' drink, like chocolate milk or apple juice. 

The PEOPLE team got an early taste of the gamer-friendly meals (and a sneak peek at the certifiably adorable collectibles!). Of course, everyone devoured the beloved nuggets, Big Mac and fries but the Nether Flame Sauce took the items up a couple of notches.

Taste testers thought the sauce had a deliciously vinegar-forward flavor, almost like it had a few dashes of Tabasco hot sauce mixed in. It's great for dipping fries and McNuggets but we loved pouring it onto a Big Mac to create a spicy remix of creamy Big Mac sauce.

Of course, each kids' order comes with its own collectibles, too. A Minecraft Movie Happy Meal has one of 12 figurines or Block World toys included inside. The goodies — like a miniature version of Jack Black’s character in the movie, expert crafter Steve and a bumblebee straight out of the game — come inside plastic boxes.

The toys included in A Minecraft Movie Meal are different from the Happy Meal offerings. Customers can snag one of six McDonald’s ✕ Minecraft characters including the block version of menu items like a Big Mac, French fry box and soda or mascots including Grimace, Hamburglar and Birdie.

The meals launch just days before the movie’s box office arrival on Thursday, April 4. 

A Minecraft Movie follows Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (played by Jason Momoa), Natalie (A Good Girls Guide to Murder's Emma Myers), Dawn (Orange Is the New Black's Danielle Brooks) and Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen). The “four misfits” are pulled into the Overworld, a "bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination,” where they meet Black’s character, Steve. Jennifer Coolidge and Kate McKinnon also pop up in their adventure. 

A Minecraft Movie is in theaters April 4.
