Broderick previously told PEOPLE that he was "so proud and happy to work" with James on 'Elsbeth', which airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on CBS

It’s a family affair for Matthew Broderick and his son James Wilkie on Elsbeth!

The father-son duo are set to make their onscreen debut together on the Feb. 20 episode — titled “Foiled Again” —  of the hit CBS series, which will focus on the investigation into “the mysterious death of a college admissions officer,” according to an official synopsis.

“Elsbeth (Carrie Preston) finds herself fencing with Lawrence Grey (Matthew), an independent educational consultant who promises an Ivy League future to high-paying clients and their painfully average kids,” the description continues. “The case also causes Elsbeth and Teddy to question how well she prepared him for the real world.”

While investigating the mysterious death of a college admissions officer, Elsbeth finds herself fencing with an independent educational consultant named Lawrence (Matthew Broderick) who promises an Ivy League future to high-paying clients and their painfully average kids. Meanwhile, Teddy and Elsbeth butt heads after she questions whether she prepared him enough for the real world, on the CBS original series ELSBETH, Thursday, Feb. 20 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs)* Pictured (L-R): James Wilkie Broderick as Carl and Matthew Broderick as Lawrence Grey Photo: Michael Parmelee/CBS ©2024 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. In PEOPLE’s exclusive sneak peek of the episode, Lawrence is getting the lowdown on a case as Carl (James) — a top “success trainer” at his company, Outmatch Educational Consulting — listens in and writes in a notebook.

When he arrives in his office, Elsbeth immediately questions how well Lawrence knew Ethan.

“He was one of my early success stories,” Lawrence explains. “He was just a scrawny little kid in his high school drama club, always puffing on his inhaler. I helped him find fencing which changed his life.”

When asked if he knew about Ethan’s asthma, he replies, “He talked about that with everyone.”

Elsbeth’s attention turns to all Lawrence’s employees. She says, “So all these young people are helping high school seniors.”

“Oh, no, we usually start younger,” Lawrence says, to which Elsbeth responds, “That explains the sandbox.”

“Never too early,” Lawrence adds, which makes Elsbeth question how she raised her own son, Teddy.

“Gosh, seeing all this makes me wonder if I did right by Teddy,” she says before revealing that he now works for a nonprofit.

“As long as he's happy,” Lawrence teases.
