We're not complete without this cult classic!

When Edward Scissorhands first premiered in December 1990, it marked the first of many Tim Burton films starring Johnny Depp as a gentle, scissor-handed humanoid. The tale follows Edward as he attempts to integrate into picture-perfect suburbia after being taken in by well-meaning mom and Avon lady Peg Boggs (Dianne Weist).

A critical and financial success, the gothic film earned an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Depp a Golden Globe nod for best actor in a motion picture - comedy or musical in 1991. It also amassed a devoted fanbase that returns to it year after year, particularly during Halloween and the holiday season. (Who can forget that magical snow dance scene?)

Explaining his process for bringing the sensitive — albeit naive —titular character to life, Depp told former talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres in 2012 (via Entertainment Weekly), "Scissorhands was a combination. The idea of a newborn seeing things for the first time."

He continued, "And also, a dog that I'd had. This dog … with unconditional love, this sort of purity in my dog."

From Depp's continued work with the prolific director to Winona Ryder's role on the smash Netflix hit Stranger Things, here's what the cast of Edward Scissorhands is up to now.

Depp had career momentum when he stepped into the memorable makeup of Edward Scissorhands. He had roles in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1983) and Platoon (1986), but in 1987, he became a household name when he began his stint on the TV series 21 Jump Street.

Edward Scissorhands kicked off his decades-long partnership with Burton — with whom he's collaborated several times since in Ed Wood (1994), Corpse Bride (2005), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007).

During an interview in Tara Wood's untitled docuseries about Burton, Depp said that the filmmaker and Edward Scissorhands script "passed through everything, anything, solid and went to the very core of whatever I am. The writing was beautiful. The character was beautiful. What I suppose [attracted] me emotionally was that Edward was me. It's exactly what I should be doing."

Outside of his work with Burton, Depp landed What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) and Donnie Brasco (1997) — and in 2003, he stepped into the role of Jack Sparrow for Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

He also starred as Grindelwald in 2016's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and the 2018 sequel Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. In 2023, he portrayed Louis XV in the period drama Jeanne de Barry. He's also set to play Satan alongside stars like Adam Driver, Jeff Bridges and Jason Momoa in Terry Gilliam's upcoming film, The Carnival at the End of Days.

Depp shares two children with his ex Vanessa Paradis: son Jack and daughter and Idol actress Lily-Rose. He also dated his former Edward Scissorhands costar, Ryder, from 1990 to 1993.

Edward Scissorhands was not Ryder's first time in the world of Burton; she secured her breakout role as Lydia Deetz in the 1988 dark comedy Beetlejuice. (She even solidified her comedic chops that same year in Heathers opposite Christian Slater.) Ryder has since thanked the filmmaker for believing in her early in her career.

"You affirmed my voice. You reinforced my confidence to be myself, to go against the tides of conformity," Ryder said during her speech at Burton's Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in 2023, per Entertainment Weekly. "Your creative inclusiveness showed me what true artistic collaboration looked like, and, in other words, you made being a weird girl not just okay but something to celebrate and even kind of cool."

In the '90s, Ryder starred in The Age of Innocence (1993), Reality Bites (1994), Little Women (1994) and Girl, Interrupted (1999).

She has since reunited with Burton, lending her voice to the 2012 animated flick Frankenweenie and reprising her role as Lydia in the 2024 sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Ryder joined the ensemble cast of Stranger Things in 2016 and is expected to remain on the show through its final season in 2025.

Once romantically involved with former costar Depp in the '90s, Ryder has been dating Scott Mackinlay Hahn since 2011.

Following his role in Edward Scissorhands, Arkin appeared in Glengarry Glen Ross (1992), Little Miss Sunshine (2006) — which won him an Oscar — and Argo (2012). He also had a successful career on the small screen with shows such as Chicago Hope, The Pentagon Papers and The Kominsky Method (the latter of which earned him Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations).

Arkin was a father of three and wed his third wife, Suzanne Newlander, in 1996. He died at the age of 89 in 2023.
