Woman in Tears After Mother-In-Law Accidentally Called Her a ‘Snobby’ Family Member's Name

A woman shares that her mother-in-law has 'mistakenly' called her someone else's name more than once — and she's not taking it as a compliment

A mother-in-law's name mixup is not sitting right with one woman.

In a forum post on the U.K. site Mumsnet titled ‘MIL called me the wrong name,’ commenters have shown that they are strongly opinionated about the situation that came up between the woman and her mother-in-law.

Prefacing that the woman’s mother-in-law "dislikes" a family member named Sarah, the original poster writes, “Whenever Sarah has been mentioned she’s been described as snobby, stuck up, miserable, awkward, always moaning about something and obsessed with money.”

The woman herself has only met Sarah once, and clarifies that she "can’t really comment on what she’s like," but added that she’s never heard her husband’s family "say anything positive" about her.

The poster started to question her relationship with her mother-in-law when she apparently said "Would you like another glass of wine, Sarah?" to the woman during a family meal.

“Sarah wasn’t even at the meal, so understandably I was a bit taken aback and hurt,” the woman wrote.

She said she "brushed it off" and "didn’t say anything" to her husband, but asked a few days later if she was "anything like Sarah," to which he replied, "Of course you’re bloody not."

The woman said that the situation occurred again after her mother-in-law was "moaning about Sarah again," saying to her, "Would you like some prosecco, Sarah?"

“I’ve got quite a lot going on at the moment, and I could’ve burst into tears,” she wrote about the incident. “I held it together until we got home but ended up crying to DP (domestic partner) thinking MIL (mother-in-law) must hate me.”

“He was understanding but says she really likes me and it must’ve been just a genuine mistake,” the poster noted.

She prompted commenters to leave their advice, wrapping up her post saying “AIBU?” or “Am I being unreasonable?”, then clarifying that she wanted users to answer by saying "you obviously remind MIL of Sarah in some way" or "sounds like an honest mistake."

Nearly all commenters agreed on their stance on the situation.

“I think it’s an honest mistake. Sometimes I go through all of my kids names before calling the right one,” one user said.

Another wrote, “It’s nothing to do with how she feels about you. You’re massively overreacting to cry about it.”

“My mother in law runs through lists of family members names before she gets the right one, sometimes the dog is included 😆. Chill,” a user wrote.

One commenter pointed out that it may have had to do with the conversation at hand, writing “Sarah was on her mind and so that’s the name she said. If she had been talking about someone whom she absolutely idolizes and called their name in error would think ‘oh she must think I’m just like her, she really thinks I’m amazing?' ”

“People do this all the time! I can’t even begin to understand why you’d think this was such a big deal. You sound very insecure,” one person pointed out.

A commenter acknowledged a scenario in which the woman's mother-in-law could have meant to harm with the name swap, saying, “Even if she did call you [that] deliberately, are you concerned about being liked by a woman whom repeatedly moans on like that about one of her relatives? It sounds pretty dire, everyone sitting round the table listening to her go on like that.”
