Nerissa Kimble vented about her experience at a hair salon in a Houston suburb in a now-viral TikTok video shared on March 16. She explained that prior to her silk press appointment, she had combed “all of the build-up” from her natural hair that had resulted from wearing faux locs. Kimble then stated that she decided to book the treatment that leaves hair silky, smooth and straight while using minimal heat after being impressed by photos of clients’ hair posted on the salon’s Instagram page. She added that the silk press was priced at $95, but she was told in advance that it could cost more, depending on the length of her hair. Next sharing a conversation she had with the stylist before her appointment, Kimble said, “She did make a statement saying when clients take out faux locs, hair has to be washed, detangled and washed again." “Okay, so I’m thinking that’s their procedure,” she continued. “That’s weird, I ain’t never seen it, ain’t ever heard of that, I ain’t ever seen it, but I guess they’ve got to wash it, detangle it, wash it again, if that’s their procedure.” On the day of her appointment, Kimble said in her video that she was “excited,” as she had been wearing faux locs for seven weeks. But, when she arrived at the salon with her natural hair styled in two buns, she claimed she was met with apprehension from another employee as she was walked to a sink to have her tresses washed. “He was like, 'Normally she doesn’t do your hair if you just took faux locs out,' " Kimble recalled of her conversation with the worker at the sink. “So I’m like, 'What do you mean? I told y’all I was going to take some faux locs out.' " Woman Is Kicked Out by Hairdresser After Complaining Home Salon Is Too Cold: ‘Customer Service Is Everything' The employee, Kimble said, then continued to explain that she was supposed to wash and detangle her hair herself before the appointment, and when the stylist came over after learning about the situation, the worker looked at her hair and told Kimble they couldn’t do her silk press because she didn't wash and detangle before the appointment. “Why would I wash and detangle my own hair, when y’all are going to wash and detangle it anyway,” Kimble said she questioned. “It’s natural hair. When natural hair gets wet, you’ve got to go and detangle it, because it’s natural.” A woman getting her hair done at a salon (stock image). Getty Kimble said the stylist then explained to her that it would take “too many hours” for them to detangle her hair and argued every salon expects clients to do the task themselves before their appointment. “I said, 'No they don’t,' " Kimble recalled responding to the stylist. "I’ve been going to a beauty salon since I was 8 years old. I can see if I asked you to take the braids down, that’s different, or if I came in here with braids [were] still in, that’s different." “I said, 'Why would I have washed my hair last night and detangled it, and you come back the next day, less than 24 hours later, and wash my hair again?'" she added. Kimble claimed that she was then forced to leave the salon without her hair done. And, given that it was after 5 p.m. local time on a Saturday, she said there wasn’t another hairdresser open that she could go to instead. Kimble — who runs her own business, NKFitness By Nerissa LLC — has since argued that she thinks the salon’s rules were unreasonable. "You don’t wash black people’s natural hair back to back in less than 24 hours," she said. “I’m so mad. I don’t like to be walking around with my hair looking like this." In the comments section of the video, which has garnered over 1 million views and thousands of comments, many agreed with Kimble's feelings on the situation. “The foundation of a good silk press is the wash, which should be done by the stylist. Like boo, you went to school for this, I didn’t,” one person wrote. A woman getting her hair done at a salon (stock image). You going to do all the work,” another said. “They are not a real stylist. Ain’t no way. Hope you can find a good old school beautician because these new school folks are playing,” a third person chimed in, while one more stated, “This hair stuff is truly getting out of hand." Kimble told PEOPLE that she hadn’t received an apology from the salon, but she was able to manage to book an appointment with a different hairdresser in Houston, based on recommendations from her TikTok video. The salon that was mentioned in her viral TikTok post did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment. Close Leave a Comment
