'Saved By the Bell' Sweethearts: Mark-Paul Gosselaar Reveals He Dated Costar Elizabeth Berkley

Saved by the Bell‘s Zack Morris and Jessie Spano didn’t date for more than an episode in the beloved series, but in real life, the actors apparently had a lengthier romantic connection.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar, who played Bayside High School’s favorite prankster, revealed on Anna Faris‘ podcast Anna Faris Is Unqualified that he once dated Elizabeth Berkley, now 46.

“You’re in an environment — you know how it is,” Gosselaar, 44, began in the episode that aired Jan. 22. “When you’re working on a set, and we were young, there’s no one around really. I mean, you work and live in a bubble.”

He added that he didn’t “have a lot of choices” when it came to girls while filming the show in Los Angeles.

“You’re in your cars and you come to set and you do your work and you’re with these beautiful women and then you go back in your car,” he explained. “And you’re not going to school, so you don’t have a lot of choices.”

He added that he “didn’t go out,” in part because his mom (“my manager,” he joked) drove him to set every day.

PEOPLE first reported in 2009 that there was a lot of mingling among the actors at beloved Bay Side High.

“All of us dated at one point or another — it was incestuous!” Gosselaar confessed at the time. “Sometimes the girls would gang up on the guys. [Tiffani Thiessen] and Elizabeth would hate me, and then they’d hate [Lark Voorhies] because Lark was talking to me, and [Mario Lopez] was supposed to side with someone. All that stuff you did in high school, like, ‘How could you talk to him?’ ”

Another experience that may color Gosselaar’s time working on the show? He recently revealed that he and his castmates made “really bad deals” on residual checks when they left.

“Poor deals, back then,” he said on an episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen aired earlier this month. “It is what it is. You move on, you learn. Great experience.”
