The Weeknd Donates $1 Million Toward Los Angeles Wildfire Relief

The Weeknd is doing his part to support Los Angeles and its firefighters amid the devastating wildfires in the area.

The 34-year-old music superstar — real name Abel Tesfaye — has committed to donating $1 million, spread throughout three different organizations helping relief efforts, aiding firefighters and supporting those displaced by the fires: The Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, GoFundMe’s Wildfire Relief Fund and the LA Regional Food Bank.

The donations, according to a news release, are in partnership with World Food Program USA and the musician's XO Humanitarian Fund.

They follow The Weeknd's announcement earlier this week that he was cancelling his Rose Bowl performance and postponing the release of his forthcoming album, Hurry Up Tomorrow, "out of respect and concern for the people of Los Angeles County."

On Monday, Jan. 13, the Grammy winner announced on social media that his Jan. 25 gig had been called off and his album's release date has been pushed to Friday, Jan. 31.

“This city has always been a profound source of inspiration for me, and my thoughts are with everyone impacted during this difficult time. In light of this, I have also decided to push the release of my album to January 31st," he wrote. "My focus remains on supporting the recovery of these communities and aiding its incredible people as they rebuild."

He signed the message, “With love, Abel.”

The Southern California wildfires initially began in the Pacific Palisades on Jan. 7, before multiple fires broke out in the days to follow — burning over 40,000 acres, destroying more than 12,000 structures and leading to 25 deaths in total thus far as a result of the fires, per a Jan. 15 release from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.

Several other celebrities have pledged to give back amid the tragedy, with Beyoncé donating $2.5 million through her BeyGOOD foundation and Leonardo DiCaprio announcing $1 million donation in partnership with his Re:wild organization.

On Thursday, Jan. 16, Taylor Swift revealed on Instagram that she also donated to a few different organizations, including the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, before encouraging fans to do the same.

"The fires in California have devastated so many families, and it's been heartbreaking to see the stories unfold. So much suffering, loss, and destruction," Swift wrote on her Instagram Stories. "As many people embark on some of the most challenging times of their lives, there are also many amazing organizations and groups banding together to help these communities rebuild," she added.
