One of Randy Fenoli's most memorable Say Yes to the Dress moments didn't make it on camera.

Ahead of the hit TLC show's new season, the beloved bridal fashion designer, 61, spoke exclusively with PEOPLE about his favorite moments and guest stars from past seasons. He rattled off numerous celebrities who have flocked to Kleinfeld Bridal in New York City in search of their perfect dress, but paused at Martha Stewart.

"By the way, it wasn't on the show, everybody missed it, because the camera missed it," Fenoli says, revealing, "Martha Stewart slapped me."

In the season 14 premiere of Say Yes to the Dress in 2016, Stewart tagged along on a friend’s Kleinfeld shopping trip, offering her expertise along the way. The lifestyle guru was on hand to assist Bailey, an employee of Stewart’s publicist, as she rehashed her options after having doubts about her initial dress choice.

"Having had a daughter who wore a gray flannel suit to her wedding, any chance I get to help a bride is fun," Stewart, 83, said at the time.

While the camera crew captured Stewart helping Bailey choose her dream wedding gown, they didn't record her slapping Fenoli. The TLC star clarified that it wasn't an act of violence, but rather a playful gesture. Still, it took him by surprise.

"Okay, let me just tell you what happened," he tells PEOPLE. "Martha and I are friends, okay? She knows me, I know her, I've been on her show many times. I've known her for many years. So, we worked an appointment with the bride, and the bride said, 'You know, I don't like these bones of mine.' And I said, 'Well, I think that's one of the most beautiful parts of a woman,' and Martha's like, 'Don't touch her there.' "

It was then that Stewart playfully smacked him.

"And I said, 'Martha, I think she knows she's safe with me,' " Fenoli adds.

Afterward, Fenoli was "waiting on Twitter to tweet, 'Martha slapped me,' " but was let down when he found out the moment didn't make the final cut.

"The cameraman missed it, so I was very disappointed," Fenoli says.

Fenoli added that there are many more surprising moments in the upcoming season of Say Yes to the Dress, including his interactions with a nonbinary client and a bride with trichotillomania, and him officiating the first wedding inside the salon.

"There's a lot of things this season that are really unique and different, which I'm very excited about," he teases.
