Woody Harrelson Voted for Sam Rockwell to Win 2018 Best Supporting Actor Oscar — Not Himself!

Woody Harrelson was a team player when it came to voting at the 2018 Oscars.

In a PEOPLE exclusive clip from his upcoming appearance on Sunday Today with Willie Geist, Harrelson, 57, reveals that he actually voted for his Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri costar Sam Rockwell to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Both actors were nominated in the supporting actor category for their roles in the movie, and Rockwell went on to win.

“Not at all. I honestly don’t,” Harrelson answers when host Willie Geist asks if he thinks about winning an Oscar someday.

“With the last, Three Billboards — first of all, I voted for Sam Rockwell,” he reveals. “His performance was astoundingly great. So, I don’t know. It’s kinda like, I feel like I got an award with my life. What an award, to get this life. I don’t think about it. I did, years ago, but I figured out that wasn’t your pay off.”

Harrelson, who has been nominated for three Oscars, says that he first shifted his priorities when he lost the Golden Globe Award in 1996 for The People vs. Larry Flynt. Harrelson was nominated for Best Actor, but lost out to Geoffrey Rush.

And while his friends and costars all partied after the show, Harrelson recalls he couldn’t join in on the fun.

“I just went home, I was so dejected. It wasn’t that I thought I was [going to win], I was just disappointed when I didn’t,” Harrelson explains. “So by the time we got to the Academy Awards I was like, ‘I know I’m not gonna win and I’m gonna a f—— great night.’ And that’s how it’s been. I’m psyched to come to the party, I don’t give a s— if I win.”
