Don't pick up the phone! The 1996 cult classic Scream opened with a terrifying call to Drew Barrymore's Casey Becker, informing her that her boyfriend was being held hostage — and ultimately, murdered. Casey met her end next, killed by a masked assailant — an iconic opening to what has become a blockbuster horror franchise.

Though Barrymore was already a household name when the movie came out, she's since gone on to even greater things, starring in a slew of big films like The Wedding Singer (1998), Ever After (1998), Never Been Kissed (1999), Charlie's Angels (2000) and 50 First Dates (2004) as well as the Netflix series Santa Clarita Diet. Barrymore also launched her own production company and beauty line (both called Flower) and became a mom to daughters Frankie and Olive. In 2020 she launched her eponymous Emmy-nominated daytime talk show.

As the film's hero, Sidney Prescott, Neve Campbell survived slashings and other near-death scares to unmask the real killer.

Campbell — who was starring on Party of Five when Scream debuted — reprised her role in Scream 2 (1997), Scream 3 (2000), Scream 4 (2011) and the fifth film, Scream (2022), and has stayed steadily busy since with roles both in film and on TV, including the Netflix shows House of Cards and The Lincoln Lawyer.

Scream fans were shocked when Campbell announced that she would not be appearing in Scream VI because of a pay dispute, though her fellow Scream costars were supportive of her decision to bow out of the movie. However, Campbell left the door open for future appearances in the franchise.

Campbell and her actor partner, JJ Feild, have two sons.

Courteney Cox played Gale Weathers, a reporter covering the murder spree in the fictional town of Woodsboro, California — one of the few stars of the film to survive. The project introduced her to her eventual real-life husband, David Arquette.

Cox was on Friends when Scream was released and continued in television afterward on the shows Dirt, Cougar Town and Shining Vale. She appeared in all five Scream sequels.

Though Cox and Arquette split in 2013, they remain friendly co-parents to daughter Coco.

As deputy sheriff Dewey Riley, David Arquette's character helped Weathers investigate the murders, and came close to death himself — but came back for Scream 2, 3, 4 and the fifth movie, Scream.

Already well-known thanks to his famous family and roles on The Outsiders and Parenthood, Arquette continued to rack up credits, including those for the movies Never Been Kissed (1999), Bone Tomahawk (2015) and On Sacred Ground (2023). He also has produced films, like the 2020 documentary about his pro wrestling career, You Cannot Kill David Arquette.

Along with Coco, his daughter with Cox, Arquette has two sons with his wife Christina McLarty.

McGowan went on to find continued success in movies like Jawbreaker (1999), The Black Dahlia (2006), Grindhouse (2007) and Machete (2010), and on TV series like Charmed. She became one of the first women to speak out against disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, leading (though sometimes also critical of) what became known as the #MeToo movement. To focus on activism, she has since taken a step back from acting.

From 2013 to 2016, McGowan was married to artist Davey Detail.

Skeet Ulrich, a'90s heartthrob, was equally covetable and frightening as Billy Loomis, Sidney's boyfriend who is ultimately revealed to be the conniving masked killer.

Though he stepped back from the spotlight a bit to raise twins Jakob and Naiia, whom he shares with ex-wife Georgina Cates, Ulrich has kept busy on shows including Jericho, Law & Order: LA and Riverdale.

Ulrich also made a surprise cameo in the fifth Scream film, reprising his role as Loomis.

He has continued to do voice work and appeared on numerous TV shows, including roles on The Bridge, Bosch, Halt and Catch Fire, Twin Peaks and Good Girls. Lillard also had a small role in the Netflix remake of She's All That, He's All That (2021).

Though Macher died in the original Scream, Lillard made an uncredited cameo in Scream 2 and another surprise cameo in the fifth film.

While he's never been seen on screen, voice actor Roger L. Jackson has been a constant presence of the Scream franchise as the masked killer's spooky voice. And though Jackson had been working as a voice actor since the mid-'80s, his performance in Scream put him on the map.

Jackson's voice has appeared in hundreds of projects, including film (2000's Titan A.E., 2017's Monster Island), television (Mojo Jojo on The Powerpuff Girls), commercials (most notably Mr. Mucus in Mucinex ads) and video games (several games in the Final Fantasy series, Red Dead Redemption 2, and many Star Wars games). Jackson even reprised his Ghostface role on the Scream television series.
