Rami Malek Shows Off Major PDA with Girlfriend Lucy Boynton at the 2019 Academy Awards

The Bohemian Rhapsody star won best actor at the Oscars for his portrayal of Queen's Freddie Mercury, and shared the moment with his costar and girlfriend

Rami Malek‘s rhapsody continues!

Malek took home the award for Best Actor at the 2019 Academy Awards on Sunday for his performance as the late Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody.

After his name was announced, Malek passionately kissed his girlfriend and costar Lucy Boynton, with whom he walked the red carpet earlier in the night.

“My mom is in here somewhere, I love you. I love you lady,” Malek, 37, said while accepting the award. “My family, thank you for all of this. My dad didn’t get to see me do any of this, but I think he’s looking down on me right now. This is a monumental moment.”

He went on to thank Queen, as well as producers Graham King and Denis O’Sullivan.

“I’m so appreciative to all of you, to everyone who has had a hand in getting me here,” Malek continued. “To the Academy, to people who took a change on me every step of the way. Graham King, Denis O’Sullivan, everyone at Fox and New Regency, thank you guys so much. I might not have been the obvious choice but I guess it worked out. Thank you Queen. Thank you guys for allowing me to be the tiniest part of your phenomenal, extraordinary legacy. I am forever in your debt.”

Malek wrapped his speech by shouting out Boynton, 25, who plays Mercury’s former fiancée Mary Austin in the musical film.

“Lucy Boynton, you’re the heart of this film,” he concluded. “You are beyond immensely talented you have captured my heart. Thank you so much.”

For the trophy, Malek beat out fellow nominees Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born), Willem Dafoe (At Eternity’s Gate), Christian Bale (Vice) and Viggo Mortensen (Green Book).

Malek, who won both a Golden Globe award and Screen Actors Guild award earlier this month for the role, initially believed taking on the part of the Queen frontman would kill his career.

The actor spoke to an audience at Cinemacon in April 2018 where he said, “When I got this role, I thought, ‘Oh my God, this could be a career-defining performance.’ And about two minutes later I thought, This could be a career killer.”

The Mr. Robot star wasn’t kidding either, adding, “You don’t get this right and it’s trouble.”

The movie chronicles Queen from 1970, when Mercury teamed with Brian May and Roger Taylor, until the band’s performance at Live Aid in 1985, six years before the singer died of complications from AIDS.
