An Australian mixed-martial arts fighter is being remembered as a “true warrior” and a “beloved son” after he died from a muscle condition caused by a high-intensity workout earlier this month.
Jake Sendler died on Thursday, March 13 after he was placed in an induced coma and had multiple surgeries, according to News Australia.
The 21-year-old Melbourne fighter needed help to get out of the ring after an amateur fight on March 2 that lasted a full three rounds, according to the outlet. Sendler’s mother, Sharone Sendler, said that medical officials at the event thought he was dehydrated and may have had a concussion, so they called an ambulance.
However, doctors at the hospital soon discovered that Sendler had rhabdomyolysis, a rare muscle injury that causes the muscles in a person’s body to break down. According to the Cleveland Clinic, rhabdomyolysis is “a life-threatening condition that can happen after an injury or excessive exercise without rest.”
A little less than two weeks and multiple surgeries later, Sendler died from the condition.

“I said to him, ‘it’s OK baby, you can rest now, you fought so hard’ and I kissed him on the forehead and he passed away,” Sendler’s mother told News Australia. “It was the worst moment of my life.”
The Sendler family launched a GoFundMe to raise money to help cover funeral expenses and medical costs, as well as to contribute “to awareness initiatives” about rhabdomyolysis.
“While preparing for an upcoming fight, Jake unknowingly pushed through worsening symptoms,” the family wrote. “He continued training, working, and coaching, unaware that his body was shutting down. Astonishingly, even as his organs were failing, Jake stepped into the ring one final time and fought courageously, demonstrating incredible determination and strength.”

" Jake was not only a fighter in the MMA ring but also a true warrior in life," the family wrote, adding, “A dedicated athlete, compassionate coach, beloved son, brother, and friend, Jake's generous heart, boundless energy, and unwavering support deeply touched everyone who knew him.”
They continued, “Whether training with teammates, enjoying the outdoors, fishing, or spending time at the beach, Jake’s infectious positivity uplifted all those around him. He selflessly devoted himself to others, embodying strength and kindness in equal measure.”
The family’s fundraiser has raised more than $37,000 AUD as of Friday, March 21.
