John Mulaney Admits He Wasn't 'Going for Funny' as He Talks Inspiration Behind Baby Daughter Méi June's Name

John Mulaney is sharing a little more about the inspiration behind his baby daughter's name.

The comedian, 42, appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday, March 10, and was asked about his two kids — daughter Méi June, 5 months, and son Malcom, 3 — whom he shares with wife Olivia Munn. As they talked about Mulaney's daughter, Kimmel asked him if he named his daughter after two back-to-back months to be funny.

"No, I'm a professional comedian, so if I was going for funn,y it might be a harder laugh than May next to June," Mulaney joked. "Olivia's mom's name is Jung, so we were doing an Americanized tribute to her by naming her June."

"Originally, our daughter was going to be named June for a while. And then suddenly I went June Mulaney sounds like John Mulaney said weird, so we said how about Méi — which means plum in Chinese — and so she's Méi June," he explained.

Back in January, Munn shared a video to her Instagram Stories of her daughter Méi playing in an activity center with her legs stretched out to the bottom. Using her finest parentese, Munn repeatedly said hello to Méi and told her she loved her.

"She's so strong and happy," Munn wrote in a caption on the video. "She's wearing 6-9 months at 4 months old, so she can reach the bottom of the activity center and her neck strength is 💯."

Earlier that month, the actress shared a series of photos on her Instagram as she celebrated her daughter Méi turning 4 months old. In the adorable photo, Méi could be seen wearing a tan fuzzy trapper hat and was held up by her dad, Mulaney, as Munn sat next to them.

The couple's son Malcolm could be seen in the background, climbing on the bed. Munn included a few more photos, slowly zooming in more and more on Méi's face as she wore her fuzzy hat. She also included a video of Méi wiggling and smiling as Munn said, "Happy birthday! Hi, happy birthday! Happy 4 months!"

"Don’t worry she’s not a real bear. Happy 4 months Méi Méi!! 🥰," Munn wrote in her caption.

On the first day of 2025, Munn shared glimpses of sweet moments that capped off an eventful year for the family of four. In a video on her Instagram Stories, Munn showed her daughter Méi enjoying some tummy time at home.

Dressed in a red onesie, the infant kicked her legs and attempted to pick up her head in the adorable video taken by her mom. In another photo later in the day, the two appeared out and about together.

"Going into the new year out to lunch with my baby girl. 🍜💕," she captioned the mother-daughter selfie.
