James Taylor's music will be coming to the stage in an entirely new way.

The 77-year-old Grammy winner's discography will be used in a musical, currently titled Fire and Rain after his hit 1970 song. The project will tell an original story from Tracy Letts, the award-winning playwright behind August: Osage County and performer known for many screen roles, including Lady Bird and The Big Short, and Tony Award winner David Cromer (The Band's Visit) will handle directing duties.

Additional details about Fire and Rain are still forthcoming.

Taylor's career took off after he won over Paul McCartney and George Harrison of the Beatles with a performance in 1967. His big break led to him becoming the first artist to ever be signed by the band's record label Apple at the young age of 19.

He went on to win six Grammys and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. His most recent Grammy win came in 2021 for his project,American Standard.

Some of Taylor's most memorable hits include "Something in the Way She Moves" and "Fire and Rain," which reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, as well as covers of "You've Got a Friend" and "How Sweet It Is (to Be Loved By You)."

In 2020, Taylor spoke to PEOPLE about his journey to music, recalling how he realized he could pursue it professionally while being treat for depression as a teen. All those years later, he shared how his perception of music and art had changed.

“An artist is forced by their life circumstances to find a new way of dealing with a problem, and sometimes they blaze a trail that leads to a solution — one that other people can use. It’s hugely gratifying,” he said. “All I ever wanted to do was to play music and to have people enjoy it, occasionally use it in their lives, and make it part of their world. That’s a great feeling.”

Taylor isn't the only music star to have their life and discography turned into a stage show. Most recently, Dolly Parton is readying a project, too.

Her show — titled Dolly — will premiere in Nashville on July 18, 2025. Shows will run in the Music City through August 17, 2025 before heading to Broadway in 2026. Tickets are already available to purchase.
