Jack Black Says He's 'Ready' to Make a School of Rock Sequel over 20 Years After the Original

Is Dewey Finn ready to return to the classroom?

In an interview with JOE, Jack Black was asked about a potential follow-up to his 2003 hit film School of Rock, to which he responded, "I'm ready."

"I wish there’d be a School of Rock 2: Electric Boogaloo," he joked, nodding to the title of the 1984 sequel to Breakin' , famously titled Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo.

Black, 54, took the lead reins in School of Rock, in which he plays Dewey Finn, a substitute teacher who enlists the students to form a rock band. The film later inspired a Broadway musical adaptation.

In an interview with PEOPLE last year, Black called the film "a love letter to all the rockers who haven't hit the big time but have that dream in their hearts, because there's so many out there and it's a testament to the dreamers."

Black and his Tenacious D bandmate Kyle Gass touched on the idea of a School of Rock sequel back in January 2023, during an interview for the Octane channel on SiriusXM.

"Can we ever expect a sequel of some sort to The Pick of Destiny or School of Rock?" host Caity Babs asked the duo.

"Yup. Both of them. Breaking news. We're thinking about doing both of those," quipped Black, while Gass, 63, joked that a "hybrid" version would be called "School of D."

In his interview with PEOPLE last year, Black clarified, "There is no truth to the hybrid sequel School of Destiny," even though it was "a funny idea."

But "never say never," the Kung Fu Panda 4 voice actor added.

"Look, if [screenwriter and costar] Mike White wants to make a School of Rock sequel, it's going to happen. But he's pretty busy now. He's got White Lotus. That is pretty compelling television. I love that show," Black said.

PEOPLE also recently spoke with Miranda Cosgrove, who played one of the students, Summer Hathaway, in the film, and asked her thoughts about a potential second film.

"It was still one of the favorite experiences. I'd love to get to be a part of [a sequel] in any way," said the actress, now 30.

Of herself and her former child castmates, Cosgrove added, "We all were so little when we started. We've all grown up, and it's just really ... I'm so lucky that I got to be a part of it."
