The Color Purple star and Golden Globe nominee, 39, wore a strapless dress and opera gloves for her first trip to the awards show. The design featured a black velvet top and silver skirt with a lilac overlay. She also wore a ring by Simon G and two pairs of earrings, a bracelet and ring by Ring Concierge jewelry. The American Idol season three winner also played the part on Broadway, an experience she told PEOPLE she “hated.” “That was around the time that my life was so crazy, so it was almost like carrying my cross and Celie’s cross. I didn’t know how to come out of the character,” she shared in an exclusive interview.
