Doechii's family makes sure her head doesn't get too big.

In a new Cosmopolitan cover story interview, the "Denial Is a River" rapper opened up about her relatives' reaction to watching her skyrocket to fame over the last year.

"They’re always keeping me grounded," Doechii, 26, told the outlet. "Most of the time, I don’t talk about work with them."

She then recalled, "I was in the car with my family and my team, in a dress looking fab, and my sister chose that moment to ask if I farted. Like, number one, no I didn’t, and number two, why would you say that? Like, I’m a superstar. I don’t fart!"

The Grammy winner, whose real name is Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon, added, "I'm just Jaylah to them."

Family members aren't the only people allowed to call Doechii by her birth name. "Anybody who truly knows me calls me Jaylah, and I don’t even have to protect it," she said.

"It’s like nobody who knows me calls me Doechii," noted the star.

Elsewhere in the Cosmopolitan interview, the "Anxiety" artist opened up about another aspect of her personal life: romance. She currently has a girlfriend and told the publication, "All of my relationships inspire my music because they make up my life experience."

"This is such a Leo thing to say, but my literal existence as a queer Black woman is a major contribution to the hip-hop genre," said Doechii.

She continued, "I’m speaking truthfully from a queer Black woman’s perspective, and being honest about my life through my lens is amazing. That perspective is being highlighted, and we need queer perspectives."

While Doechii has been releasing music for nearly a decade, her 2024 mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal marked a major breakthrough for the performer. She earned hits with its tracks "Nissan Altima" and "Denial Is a River."

Her song "Anxiety," originally released on YouTube in 2019, went viral on TikTok earlier this year and led the musician to officially release the track on streaming platforms. It's since become her biggest hit, peaking at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100.

She teased new music to Cosmopolitan. "On my next project, I plan on having conversations. They might be hard for some people to have, but I think I want to bring up a dialogue about topics that might be hard for people to hear," she said.

"I don’t want to give them away," explained Doechii. "But we’re going to have a conversation on the album."
