A 28-year-old Maryland police officer was killed Sunday afternoon after two brothers allegedly opened fire unprovoked on a police station in Landover, PEOPLE confirms.
Officer Jacai Colson, whom police say was a four-year veteran of the Prince George’s County Police Department, was killed. Colson had been working undercover with the department’s narcotics division, police say.
After one of the suspects allegedly shot into the station’s front doors, Colson and several other officers rushed outside to confront the men, police say. Police say Colson, who would have turned 29 this week, was shot as he exited the station.

One of the suspects was wounded in the gunfight and is being treated for his wounds at a nearby hospital, police say. A second man, his brother, has been taken into custody. Police are not revealing the names of the two suspects at this time.
Colson’s death comes less than two weeks after 28-year-old Virginia police officer Ashley Guindon was shot and killed on her first day on the job for the Prince William County Police Department.
