Sarah Kraffty has been sleepwalking for as long as she can remember. However, it wasn’t until recently that the content creator and her husband, Joel, also a social media creator, discovered CelinaSpookyBoo, another creator who records herself sleepwalking and shares the videos on TikTok.

Inspired by her, the couple, who has two kids, decided to try capturing Sarah’s late-night moves on tape. They bought cameras and set them up around their house, including inside their refrigerator. In the first few days after they started, they would review the footage to see what Sarah had been up to that night.

Then, one day, with Sarah’s permission, Joel shared a video on TikTok of one of his wife’s late-night adventures, which included putting an egg and Miralax in a bowl. To his surprise, the video went viral, amassing more than 1.4 million views. A couple of weeks later, Joel shared another TikTok of Sarah putting her hairbrush in the toaster, which also garnered 1.5 million views.

In the comments, thousands of people chimed in to share their own sleepwalking fiascos, or those of their relatives or friends.

“I was really surprised at how many people sleepwalk,” Sarah tells PEOPLE exclusively. “I couldn’t believe how many people knew about it or knew someone who had experienced it. I mean, hundreds of thousands of people.”

Speaking to PEOPLE over Zoom, the parents explained that even before they set up the cameras, they had a mental checklist they go through every night, which includes locking all the doors to ensure Sarah doesn't wander outside. They also make sure the microwave, toaster oven and regular oven are all turned off or locked — something they hadn’t realized those appliances could do until recently.

They add that safety is their top priority. While Sarah’s never exited the house, she knows of some sleepwalkers who have. So, after reading through the comments, the couple decided to share their nighttime routine for managing Sarah’s sleepwalking episodes, hoping to inspire others to take precautions, too.

The video went viral as well, amassing more than 1 million views, with people sharing their own suggestions.

"Someone suggested taking the knobs off the stove so that you can’t turn it on, which I thought was a great idea," Sarah says. "I’ve never had an issue with the stove, but for people who do, some mentioned certain locks that you can get. I was surprised at how many helpful comments there were. Somebody said to hide the keys, because maybe your subconscious notices if you move them. I don’t know if I’d remember if I moved them, but it’s an interesting thought. That’s one thing I haven’t really looked into."

"It's something that she's experienced, and we've been dealing with for a long time, so it's become a pretty well-patterned routine," Joel adds. "What we do is just focus on safety, but taking all these extra steps might actually have a worse outcome. I mean, some people were suggesting locking the bedroom door or putting a child lock on it. But then others were saying that sleepwalkers might try to get out anyway, and that could become part of the dream. Like, 'Okay, now I’m going out the window.' "

Looking ahead, Sarah and Joel hope to continue to share about Sarah's sleepwalking on TikTok to spread awareness and inspire others who might also be sleepwalkers to embrace the behavior.

"I hope that creates a little bit more talking discussion about it," Sarah says. "I don't think that very many stories have been shared about sleepwalking. And if more people share their stuff and share what they do, like our nighttime routine, that might help other people."
