An Alabama school bus driver allegedly fell asleep before getting into a crash that injured six students, according to reports.
The Mobile County Public Schools stated the driver fell asleep, which was followed by the bus running off the road and overturning on Feb. 12, NBC affiliate WPMI, Fox affiliate WALA and CBS affiliate WKRG reported on Friday, Feb. 28.
The incident occurred on Mason Ferry Road in Wilmer, reported Al.com.
“We had a bus accident this afternoon which involved 14 students with currently three of the students being transported for injuries,” a statement from MCPS read at the time, Al.com shared. “MCPSS officials and law enforcement officials are currently on the scene to assist with ensuring everyone’s safety and to investigate the accident. Please keep our students in your thoughts and prayers as they recover from the injuries sustained.”
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency issued an update on Feb. 13, which was shared by WPMI, that read in part: "The driver of the bus, Angela Lane Weaver, 47, of Lucedale, Miss., was injured and transported to Springhill Hospital in Mobile for treatment. The six juvenile passengers were also injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment...ALEA Highway Patrol Division continues to investigate."
The bus was traveling at a speed of 54 mph in a 45 mph zone, the crash report also said.
Court records show that Weaver had received three speeding tickets in the last four years, WKRG and WALA reported. In February 2021, she was ticketed for going 71 mph in a 45 mph zone. Then, in May 2023, Weaver was cited for going 74 mph in a 55 mph zone.
Most recently, in September 2024, she received a ticket for driving 80 mph in a 55 mph zone.
PEOPLE contacted the MCPS for comment on Monday, Mar. 3. The Mobile County Public Schools earlier shared a statement with WALA following the release of the crash report.

“Mobile County Public Schools has been working closely with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) in investigating the recent school bus accident,” read the school district's statement. “ALEA has now released its report, which found that the driver’s actions were in violation of bus safety rules and regulations. This is a serious and concerning situation, and we remain committed to ensuring the highest level of safety for our students.”
“The bus driver remains on administrative leave,” Mobile County Public Schools added. “As this is a personnel matter, we are limited in what we can say, but we will use the findings of this report to determine further disciplinary action. At MCPSS, the safety of our students is always our top priority.”
Johnny Hatcher, a school board member, had some questions following the crash report.
“The biggest concern I have is how did she slip through the cracks?" he asked. "We pay a vendor to check all the MVRs [motor vehicle records]. It slipped through their cracks, not ours, theirs.”
