Whether you’re taking a dip in the pool, swimming in wide open water, or just lounging on the beach, you should feel cute and comfortable in your swimsuit of choice.
Shopping for a swimsuit can be just as dreadful as finding a comfortable bra or well-fitting jeans — that’s why we tested a bunch, so you don’t have to.
We tried over 45 swimsuits to find which ones held up (and stay put) in the water, on the beach, and everywhere else you’d wear your new suit.
Our Top Picks
Best Overall One-Piece
Andie The Amalfi
Supportive shelf bra with soft cups for lift and secure fit
Adjustable spaghetti shoulder straps
Longer drying time compared to others we tested
If you’re looking for the crème de la crème of one-pieces, this classic Andie one-piece has it all: seven sizes, classic and long torso fits, three coverage options, plus 14 unique color choices. In addition to its classic silhouette and adjustable straps, this suit has a built-in shelf bra with soft cups for extra support to ensure busts of all sizes stay in place. The straps and shelf bra were surprisingly supportive, even for our tester with an E-cup bust.
We wore it to the water park all day and were very impressed with how well it held up, even on water slides. The fabric nylon and spandex blend was also great: The material remained comfortable even when wet, without feeling soggy or baggy afterward.
Size Range: XS-XXXL | Material: 82% nylon, 18% spandex | Color Options: 14
Testers Say
“This is one of those swimsuits you'd easily feel comfortable wearing all day, eating in, walking around in. It doesn't hold on to the water, so you're never drenched in water even when you're wet.” –Elena Garcia, director of beauty testing

Best Scoop Neck One-Piece
Meyeeka Womens Scoop Neck Cut Out One Piece Swimsuit
Cut-out style gives you the fun of a bikini with the comfort of a one-piece
Lace-up back provides moderate support across the bust and a more customizable fit
Printed version faded after a few wears and washes
This swimsuit brings all the playfulness of a two-piece with the support of a one-piece, which is why PEOPLE editor Madison Yauger loved it so much that she bought it in two colors. The cut-out swimsuit has a lace-up closure across the back, which allows for a more customizable fit across the top. Yauger did note that part of the printed design on one of her suits has faded a little, though not enough to make her stop wearing it.
Editors Say
“I've traveled with these swimsuits for several years, and they have held up well. Considering the quality and low price, I can't recommend this swimsuit highly enough.” — Madison Yauger
Size Range: S-XL | Material: Nylon, spandex | Color Options: 27
Best for Curvy Women
Tempt Me High-waist Two-piece Swimsuit
Sizing up to 22 plus with 44 color options
High-coverage top and bottom offer compression and support
Top and bottom perform well in water, dry quickly, and won’t change shape when wrung out
Padding in the top may be too large for smaller breasts
Bottom offers support but fits tighter than expected
A vintage-style swimsuit is always flattering, making this two-piece swimsuit from Amazon an absolute winner. Just one of several swimsuits we love at Amazon, the double-layered fabric of this two-piece suit is first-class. In our testing, we found it to be thick, soft, and durable, with a nice amount of compression to keep everything in place.
As for the fit, each part of this suit is well-structured and provides excellent coverage. While the full coverage top has no underwire or pads, it's well-shaped and supportive and features adjustable straps at the back to keep it in place. The high-waisted bottoms also fit well; they are stretchy and sit right at the waist. Although the bottom is a little tighter than the top, the strap that goes around your torso is adjustable so you can make it wider or tighter.

Best Overall Bikini
Boden Ithaca Halter Bikini Top and Panelled Bikini Bottoms
Fit is snug and secure in all types of activities
Adjustable ties and clasp closure keep top in place
Comfortable and soft fabric is gentle on the skin
Top and bottom do not stretch when hanging and drying
Not a full-coverage top
In this set, you get a beautiful moderate support bikini and matching, fitted bottoms for under $100. And even more: Both pieces impress with a comfortable fabric with a lot of stretch due to the elastane content. In our performance and comfort tests, we loved that the top provided the protection we needed no matter what we did, from boating to paddleboarding. Adjustable halter straps and a clasp back were another nice touch as they keep the fit and feel comfortable without digging into the skin. Even better, this bikini top did not feel heavy when wet and did not stretch while hanging and drying.
Like the top, the Boden Panel Bikini Bottoms were also impressive. Yes, they sit lower at the waist, but they still offer enough protection and support for all movements. Even better, the bikini bottoms performed well in our water test. Similar to the top, the fabric didn't change shape when wet and didn't stretch when it dried.
Size Range: 2-18 | Material: 80% polyamide, 20% elastane; 100% polyester lining | Color Options: 10

Best Budget Bikini
Wild Fable Triangle Bikini Top and Extra Cheeky Bikini Bottom
Strong and comfortable fabric
Fabric remained soft and vibrant even after multiple washes and wears
Top may be too light in coverage for bigger busts
This triangle-shaped bikini top has a matching cheeky bottom and comes in a bunch of colors. Both pieces range in size up to XL and are made from a strong polyester and spandex fabric that is both lightweight and comfortable. The bikini top also offers adequate coverage and support thanks to the adjustable straps. However, because it lacks an underwire, it won’t provide adequate support to heavier breasts.
This bikini performs well in and out of water. We wore it to the beach, snorkeling, and swimming and were impressed that the fabric, fit, and color remained unchanged. Even when wringing it out, it didn't stretch or tear. It does, however, take 12 hours to dry. So be sure to hang it up overnight to fully dry if you plan on wearing it the next day.
Size Range: XXS-XL | Material: 83% polyester, 17% spandex | Color Options: 5

Best Bust Support One-Piece
Panache Anya Riva Underwire One-piece
Double-layered balconette cups, adjustable straps, and snap-back closure provide support
Fabric is soft and thick and performs well in and out of water
Ultra-flattering silhouette
Slightly baggy at the mid torso, but still very supportive
Only available in two colors
Busty ladies, here's a high-coverage one-piece with double-layered balconette cups, adjustable straps, and snap-back closure that will give you comfort and support from the beach to the boardwalk. With its classic silhouette with ruching throughout the neckline, this suit is extremely flattering on all body types. And from the body to the inner Powernet, the fabric is exceptionally soft and thick yet without feeling heavy.
This one-piece is only available in seven sizes, but cups range from D to K, so it fits large breasts nicely. As a result, swimming and walking in this one-piece felt supported and secure without the slightest restriction. In addition, the fabric remains pleasantly comfortable when wet and has the advantage of drying quickly in the sun.
Size Range: 30-40, D-K cups | Material: 80% polyamide, 20% elastane | Color Options: 2
Best One-Shoulder One-Piece
Summersalt The Sidestroke
Offers full coverage from bust to cheeks
Quick drying time under the sun
Long enough design to fit a longer torso
Inclusive size range
Runs small, so you may need to size up
Bottom is not double-lined
Fabric bunches and may feel tighter when wet
In addition to flattering ruching along the silhouette and an elegant one-shoulder, this is a full-coverage bathing suit from bust to cheeks, so you’ll never feel unsupported when wearing it. The range of colors and sizes offered is also impressive: With 11 colors and sizes 0-24 available, it's a great swimsuit for curvy women, slender women, and everyone in between.
The fabric bunches up a bit when wet, so. So be sure to go one size up if you think you may need the extra breathing room. The suit dried quickly in the sun, allowing us to transition from pool to lounge chair with ease.
Size Range: 0-24 | Material: 78% recycled polyamide, 22% elastane | Color Options: 11

Best High-Waisted Bottoms
Left on Friday Hi Hi Bottom
33 color options
Quick drying time and exceptional water performance
Comfortable and durable fabric blend
For some testers, the rise of the bottoms felt too high
Top doesn’t offer full-coverage support
Pricier than others we tested
While the top and bottom of this set are available in six sizes, you can’t beat the color options. However, the fabric of both pieces is another nice touch. Thanks to a blend of nylon, polyester, and lycra, we found the fabric to be smooth, light, and breathable enough to wear to the lake or the beach.
The matching Sunday top does have a very comfortable fabric, but the lack of straps can compromise coverage and support; it suits a smaller bust best. Like the bikini top, the comfortable fabric of the Hi HI bikini bottom was highly appreciated. It may, however, sit too high on the waist for some.
No matter what color or size you prefer, both pieces in this bikini set withstand water well. Both the top and bottom dried quickly and didn't change shape when wet. Add a swimsuit cover-up and you'll be set for the beach.
Size Range: XS-XXL | Material: 46% nylon, 38% polyester, 16% lycra | Color Options: 33
Best Tie Bottoms
Skims Dipped Tie Swim Bottoms
12 color choices with sizing up to 4X
Stretchy, durable, and form-fitting fabric
Under-$100 price for both pieces
Bikini bottom is cut very high
Bikini top may not adequately cover larger breasts
Both the Skims Tank Bikini Top and the matching bikini bottom help you achieve the sporty look you love at a great price. Both the top and bottoms have a lot going for them: stretchy, durable, and body-molding fabrics with 12 color options available. The biggest plus is the size range, which goes up to 4X, something many other swimsuits we tested don’t offer.
However, the fit and coverage of the bikini top and bottom are different. In our testing, we found that the tank bikini top offers a secure band with plenty of stretch, so it moves with you and doesn’t feel too tight. At the same time, the fit of the Dipped Tie Bottom is up to preference: Like the top, it’s made from a stretchy and comfortable fabric, but the tie-up straps and extremely high cut compromise its coverage, if that's something you're looking for.
Size Range: XXS-4X | Material: 76% recycled nylon, 24% spandex | Color Options: 12
The More You Know
Because some bathing suits are tight-fitting, personal stylist Christina Stein recommends buying them a size larger. “Some swimsuits feel tighter when wet than when dry. If you need extra breathing room, this is vital,” she says. However, there are other benefits to going up a size: It can offer more coverage, which can be beneficial for those with large busts, as well as a longer lifespan for your suit as it fits more comfortably and doesn’t put pressure on the seams.

Best Bust Support Bikini
Athleta Triangle Bikini Top
Fits DD breasts well in our tests
UPF 50 protective fabric
Offers full mobility in and out of water
Takes a long time to dry
Available in sizes up to XXL, both the Athleta Triangle Bikini Top and the Clean Full Swim Bottoms are made from a recycled nylon and Lycra spandex blend that has a nice texture and weight. The fabric also offers the benefit of a sun protection factor of UPF 50, which protects the skin from sun damage, but you'll still need a good sunscreen for everything the suit doesn't cover.
As far as fit and coverage go, we found that both pieces offered a decent amount of security and support. While the top offers light support for large breasts, the ties can be pulled as tight as you like. Like the top, the bottom also has nice coverage and it stays put well. While it isn't adjustable, we liked that they allowed a full range of motion without slipping down or riding up.
Size Range: XXS-XL | Material: Recycled nylon, lycra | Color Options: 2 (top), 4 (bottoms)

Best Cheeky One-Piece
Andie Swim The Fiji
High leg cuts and strappy back give a flirty twist
Standard and long torso fit suit various body types
Medium bust support might not be suitable for larger busts
We love the Fiji One Piece from Andie that puts a flirty twist on a classic one-piece. The strappy back, high-leg silhouette, and cheeky cut make this suit more revealing than your average one-piece. We haven’t had the chance to try this one for ourselves, but reviewers say it’s a comfortable fit in and out of water. Plus, Andie offers a classic and long torso fit to suit all body types.
Size Range: XS-3XL | Material: Nylon, spandex | Color Options: 3
Best Ruffled
Blackbough Swim Candice Underwire Top and Bottom
Features adorable details, including ruffled edges and a bow on the front
Bra-style top is flattering and provides comfortable support
Top only comes in standard sizing
If you’re looking for a bikini with adorable detailing, then look no further than the Blackbough swim top, which comes in a bunch of cute prints and even has a little bow in between the cups. The matching bottoms are just as pretty as the top, with a ruffled edge and high-leg cut that sits above the hips.
PEOPLE shopping writer Alyssa Brascia is a personal fan of this suit. “I'm quite the swimsuit collector, so it's rare for me to keep going back to the same set over and over again all summer long; however, that's exactly what happened this past summer when I ordered the Candice swimsuit from Blackbough Swim,” Brascia says. She adds that the “ruffled bottoms are definitely cheeky, but you can mix and match with different colors in a more modest bottom style if you wish.”

Best Design
Hilor One Piece Front Twist Bathing Suit
Flattering, supportive, and high-coverage fit with adjustable straps
Tummy control design
Appropriate for all body types and beach or pool activities
No stretching when hanging it to dry
Absorbs and retains more water when wet
Fabric isn't the softest
Featuring a jaw-dropping price, a wide color range, and plenty of coverage, this Amazon bathing suit definitely has a lot to offer. The best part about this suit is the twisted sweetheart neckline, pull-on closure, and tummy-control design, making it easy to wear no matter your body type. Another great feature is the adjustable straps and 14 color choices.
Despite a nylon and spandex blend, we found that the fabric of this one piece wasn’t as soft as the others on our list. Instead, the fabric is stiffer but does loosen up a bit in water. However, the one-piece absorbs and retains a lot of water when wet, so drying it can take a while.
Size Range: 6-18 | Material: 82% nylon, 18% spandex | Color Options: 30
UPF 50+ protective fabric
Sizing up to 24 plus with 43 color options
Full-coverage swim shirt and shorts
Shorts ride up at the thigh
Fabric feels heavy when wet
Thanks to a UPF 50+ protective fabric, a wide range of sizes, and a high-coverage fit, this full-coverage swimsuit from Amazon will definitely come in handy this summer whether you're wearing it fishing, surfing or paddling.
In our fit test, we found that both the swim shirt and shorts offer support and security as they provide full coverage. However, keep in mind that the top doesn't have adjustable straps or a clasp like most swimsuits. Despite this, we were pleasantly surprised by the true-to-size fit of this top and the unrestricted freedom of movement it allows for all types of activities. Even though the swim shorts provide more coverage than most bikini bottoms, they do ride up the thigh a bit.
In water, both pieces in this swimsuit perform well. The fabric stays comfortable both dry and wet without losing its shape or support. However, you should keep in mind that this suit can absorb a lot of water, which will make the suit feel heavier and cause some drag in the back when swimming in it.
Size Range: XXS-24 plus | Material: 85% polyester, 15% spandex | Color Options: 32

Best Scoop-Neck
Robin Piccone Ava One-Piece Swimsuit
Fabric adjusts easily when both wet and dry
Adjustable straps keep suit secure
Great mobility and fit in our testing
We wish there was a wider size range
Pricier than others we tested
The Robin Piccone Ava Scoop-Neck Mio One-Piece features a flattering silhouette and is made from a fabric that's durable and comfortable against the skin but not too bulky. Mobility is just another perk of this suit. We were able to swim in it during fit testing and had no concerns about the suit coming loose. Instead, it was secure and had a great fit, even after hours of wear.
Additionally, this one-piece definitely holds up well in and out of the water. When wet, the fabric hugs the body well without changing its shape and never feels heavy or cumbersome. And when it’s dry, the fabric feels comfortable against the skin with a little extra stretch for freedom of movement.
Size Range: 2-14 | Material: 80% polyamide, 20% elastane | Color Options: 6

Best Coverage Top
Robin Piccone Ava RP Bikini Tee and Ava High Waist Bikini Bottom
T-shirt-style top has subtle but sturdy stitching and plenty of support
Exceptional water performance
Top and bottom are made from a thick, lightweight, and buttery fabric
We wish the sizing was more inclusive
Apart from their sleek and sexy look, each piece of this set comes in five colors and sizes up to XL. Additionally, each piece is made from a thick, lightweight, and buttery fabric that is soft to the touch and hand-washable.
During our test, we were very satisfied with the fit of the bikini top and bottom. We liked that the T-shirt style top has subtle but sturdy stitching and plenty of support to keep everything in place. The sleeves on the top were also a delight: They felt completely natural against the skin and didn’t feel bulky or heavy when wet. The bikini bottoms in this set also fit great. Yes, they may sit too high on the waist for some, but that helps the style give generous back coverage.
We liked that each piece didn’t feel heavy or bulky when wet and never lost its support even after hours of wear.

Double tie (on both top and bottom) lets you customize fit
Top is more supportive than traditional triangle top
Bottoms offer more coverage than average tie bottom
Top triangles are a bit small, so consider sizing up
Vitamin A is one of the best places to buy swimsuits, according to Hawai'i resident and PEOPLE shopping associate editorial director Erin Johnson.
While this metallic swim set is now a consistent rotation in her beach wardrobe, Johnson advises sizing up in the top for a bit more coverage but notes that the bottoms are true to size: “And no matter what, you can adjust with the tie straps, which I appreciate.”

“I originally fell in love with Vitamin A swimwear because of their linen sets, but their swimsuits are also the real deal. What to Know About Swimsuits for Women
Body Type
Because different body types have different needs in a swimsuit, Martins says it's very important to pay attention to body type when shopping for a swimsuit. “For example, people with a pear-shaped body would benefit from a piece with a square neckline to balance their silhouette, while hour-glassed shaped figures may want a halter, plunging, or asymmetric style,” she explains. Our go-to choice for a curvy figure, the Tempt Me Two-Piece Swimsuit, flatters an hourglass body shape well, as the bottoms hit just above the belly button and the top is well-shaped with adjustable straps for coverage. At the end of the day, it all comes down to which silhouettes make you feel like your most confident self.
Torso Length
Torso length is another important consideration as it will help the swimsuit fit properly and flatter your figure, Martins explains. “If you have a shorter torso, it’s best to stick to a plunging neckline style, as it visually elongates the waist down the center of your body,” she says. If you have a longer torso, a high-waisted suit is also a good choice, as it helps create the illusion of length in the torso, which can be flattering. With that in mind, anyone with a longer torso should choose the Andie The Amalfi and the Summersalt The Sidestroke as both suits are made to fit a longer torso well.
Focal Points
While some styles are more modest than others, even swim dresses and fuller-coverage suits show skin. So if you have areas you'd rather emphasize more than others, Martins recommends paying attention to the fabric and details of your suit, as some can help create a flattering silhouette.
“The smoother and simpler the fabric and cut, the more flattering the silhouette be on areas of the body that you want to slim or make less noticeable,” she tells PEOPLE. “You can also use lighter colors, bold geometric and large floral prints or bold stripes when you want to stand out and add interest, and muted dark and delicate florals when you might want to fade into the background.”
Price Range
Just like linen pants or linen dresses, the price of swimsuits can vary. Stein points out that luxury suits tend to offer the benefit of better construction, high-detailing, and quality fabrics. With this in mind, it’s best to buy a cheaper suit if you’re more of a trend shopper and want to wear it for a single season. But if quality and durability matter more to you, opt for a well-made suit at a higher price.

Behind the Scenes
Sixty of our testers tried out dozens of women's swimsuits to determine which ones were worth the money. We evaluated the chosen swimsuits on a number of factors, including:
- Fit: The first thing we did was try the swimsuits on, carefully taking note of the fit of the tops, bottoms, and one-pieces. We noted whether the swimsuits dug in or caused any discomfort and how soft the fabric felt while wearing it.
- Performance: The next thing we tested the swimsuits for was their performance when wet, which we tested by wearing the swimsuits in water and then by observing how heavy the swimsuit felt and how much water it retained, especially if there was any padding. We wore these to the pool, the beach, and in the shower, evaluating each swimsuit's fit, range of motion, and comfort. We also wanted to see if the fit of the swimsuit changed once it got wet.
- Quality: After testing the swimsuits in water, we then wrung them dry and noted if they changed in shape or quality after doing so. To see how well it dried, we laid it out to hang dry and kept tabs on how quickly the fabric lost moisture.
After fully evaluating each swimsuit, we rated each swimsuit against the following testing attributes: fit, comfort, quality, coverage, value, and performance. Out of the swimsuits we tested, these achieved the highest average ratings, earning themselves a spot on this list.
